Warning Signs of ADD/ADHD
These signs can interfere with your child’s ability to succeed in school.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
Either:
- Can’t sit still, always “on the go”
- Has boundless energy
- Always fidgeting
- Has difficulty playing quietly
Or:
- Lethargic
- Decreased play activity
- Prefers sedentary activities
EMOTIONAL RESPONSES
EMOTIONAL RESPONSES
- Unmotivated
- Low tolerance for frustration
- Cries easily
- Excessive, emotional outbursts
- Has temper tantrums when unsuccessful
- Seems anxious
- Easily overwhelmed
ATTENTION
- Trouble getting started on a task
- Trouble staying focused on repetitive tasks
- Trouble shifting attention
- Requires redirection to complete homework
- Easily distracted
- Frequent daydreaming
- Difficulty focusing on a specific task
- Can’t work with background noise
- Starts many projects but rarely finishes them
- Trouble following multiple step directions
- Appears to not hear verbal instructions
- Inconsistent performance
IMPULSIVITY
- Can’t wait to be called on
- Blurts out answers in class
- Extremely impatient
- Difficulty waiting for his/her turn
- Often acts before thinking
TIME MANAGEMENT
- Always rushing; can’t slow down
- Makes careless mistakes
- Hates to double-check
- Doesn’t use class time well
SLEEP DIFFICULTIES
- Night owl; hates to go to bed
- Difficulty waking up in the morning
- May be a restless sleeper
- Bed-wetting or sleepwalking
- Has nightmares
DISORGANIZATION
- Messy room, desk, backpack
- Constantly loses or misplaces things
- Trouble remembering daily routines
