Speech & Language Milestones


Birth – 6 Months

  • Coos
  • Vocalizes pleasure/displeasure sounds
  • Makes noise when talked to 
  • Smiles 

6 Months – 12 Months

    • Understands “no-no”
    • Babbles (“ba-ba-ba)
    • Says “ma-ma” or “da-da”
    • Says first word
    • Understands own name

12 Months – 18 Months

    • Understands simple commands (“come here”)
    • Vocabulary of 4-20 words
    • Uses words to label objects (only about 2-3 objects)
    • Tries to imitate simple words

18 Months – 24 Months

    • Expressive vocabulary of 50 words
    • Approximately 25-50% intelligible to strangers
    • Receptive vocabulary of 200-300 words
    • Makes animal sounds (“moo”)
    • Starts using 2 words together (“more bubble”)
    • Identifies simple body parts (nose, ears, etc.)

2 Years – 3 Years

    • Expressive vocabulary of 50-250 words
    • Is approximately 50-75% intelligible
    • Understands some spatial concepts (“in” & “on”)
    • Knows pronouns (“her”, “he”, “she)
    • Uses 2-4 word phrases
    • Uses plurals
    • Understands most things said to him/her

3 Years – 4 Years

    • Speech is approximately 80% intelligible
    • Identifies colors
    • Understands object functions
    • Answers simples questions
    • 4-5 word sentences

4 Years – 5 Years

    • Answers “why” questions
    • List items in categories
    • Uses sentences of 4-8 words
    • Answers questions about short stories

5 Years – 6 Years

    • Understands rhyming
    • Understands sequences (first, last)
    • Names days of week
    • Follow instructions

6 Years – 7 Years

    • Understands left & right
    • Engages in conversations
    • Understands most concepts of time
    • Sentences length approximately 6 words

Feeding Milestones


Birth – 1 Month
    • Suckle on nipple (breast or bottle)
    • Presences of rooting reflex
    • Nose breathing
2 Months – 4 Months
    • Mouth opens to anticipate feeding
    • Continues suckling nipple
    • Voluntary control of mouth
    • Improved lip closure
5 Months
    • Liquids and purees administered
    • Gagging on new textures
    • Sucking pattern used with spoon
6 Months
    • Rooting reflex disappears
    • Gag reflex reduced
7 Months
    • Lower lip stabilized for cup drinking
    • Drooling with teething occurs
10 Months – 12 Months
    • Independent finger feeding
    • Increased cup drinking & weaning from nipple
    • Removes food from spoon using lip
12 Months – 18 Months
    • Consumes all textures
    • Can use straw for drinking
18 Months – 24 Months
    • Primarily self-feeding
    • Swallows with lip closure
    • Rotary chewing predominate
2 Years – 3 Years
    • Completely self feeding
    • Uses fork independently
    • Holds cup with one hand
